No. Most soundbars are active/powered speakers. There is built in amps in the speakers that power the speakers. Depending what audio inputs your soundbar has and what audio outputs your devices such as a tv has, your probably going to use a s/pdif optical or a s/pdif coaxial cable.

Sound bars no not need to be connected to a receiver. You connect an optical audio cable from the tv to the sound bar. Follow the direction on the owners manual of the sound bar. Hope this will help you out.
