How do I fix a converted movie file that gradually loses video audio sync?

So we have this kinda old dvd player but new enough to have a usb port to play movie files, so I took some movies I had which we're hd/blu ray files and converted them to avi with 720p ntsc size output, everything plays fine on computer but when playing on the dvd player the video seems to lose frames here and there and loses sync with the audio after a while. However pausing and playing fixes the sync issues, where does the problem really lay? is it with the dvd player? the usb or is there something I can do with my conversion settings to fix this frame loss issue?
