HDMI cables old and new?

I have an hdmi cable that is similar to the cables on the back of a desktop tower...the sort that you have to tighten the cable with little screws. But the hdmi cable that I purchased for my mom looks more like a usb style hookup...both of them work. Why are there two dlfferent styles? If I want to buy an adapter so I can hook up my phone to the TV do I need a specific style?
