Is it okay to use an instrument cable connector to make a speaker cable?

I'm making some speaker cables for the sound system from hell (12 AWG before you ask) and I've got plenty of instrument cable 1/4" connectors but none of the fatter connectors I see on most speaker cables. Is there any reason why I can't use the smaller connectors for speaker cable? I can't imagine they wouldn't be able to handle the current

The larger 1/4 inch speaker connectors are used on speaker cable because they are designed to accept the larger cable
