You should get a speaker level to line level adapter for this. The best way to do it is with a transformer but it can also be done with a resistor network. Or you could just buy something like this...http://www.amazon.com/BOSS-Audio-B65N-Le...  You say your HTiB is 5.1 so that means it should have a subwoofer output but the problem is that it's a speaker level output. The adapter will go between this and your powered subwoofer. It's not a great solution but it should work. Of course the better solution will always be to ditch the HTiB and just get a decent receiver but the adapter option should get you by until you're ready for a new receiver.  mk   if it is an unworkable idea... Then umm why does it work? I don't understand your rant when I spent 60 bucks on the system that shakes my room to the point where I have to turn it down.
