Can I put a soundbar in the rear of the living room above the couch?

I recently purchased a Vizio 2.1 sound bar with a wireless sub but it has not arrived yet. I want to mount the sound bar in the back of my living room (on the wall opposite the TV) above the couch and put the sub under my end table. I bought a 35ft digital optical cable to run around the room to plug the sound bar into my TV. Has anybody ever tried this? Any recommendations? I know you're typically supposed to put the sound bar above or below the TV but I want to know if anybody has tried this and what it sounded like.
