I've been told the tree of heaven in the garden next to mine is toxic to plants around it. It is close to where I want to plant: will my fruit and veg be safe to eat?

The tree of heaven, Ailanthus altissima, has roots, bark and leaves that release a chemical that inhibits the germination and growth of other plants near the tree.

So if your veg do grow, they're not affected and are safe to eat.

You will have to negotiate with the neighbours. There is no obligation for them to remove it, because although it is registered as invasive, it is not yet deemed threatening.

Make sure you use a qualified tree surgeon: tree of heaven is not easy to remove, because it resprouts suckers, so the entire root ball needs to be removed. I
