Some advocate cutting off the decaying branch before rot spreads and I can see where that might be a wise choice in some instances but when it came to our tree, the base of the tree was filled with black rot, and clearly cannot be saved. I even doubt that the other side of this "V" shaped tree can be saved either for it is closely connected to the side that fell.
