Ps3 optical surround sound setup questions?

I may buy a receiver(i have speakers) to play my ps3 and ps4 in surround sound. they are both setup with HDMI cables currently. The receiver someone wants to sell me does not have HDMI ports but it does have a digital optical out port. Im assuming that i would run optical out from my ps3/4 to the receiver and from there to my TV(Which has one optical port)? 

If i were to do this, would it make my picture/sound worse than using HDMI cables as i am now? Or would the optical cable deliver sound only.
