I have a Sony 6.2 receiver with 3 Hdmi's and I used to have a PS3. I never used any Hdmi connections on the receiver. I ran one Hdmi out from the PS3 to the TV and one Optical audio out from the PS3 to the Optical in on the receiver. If you do not yet have a receiver , I would connect the Hdmi from your PS to Hdmi in on your TV. Hdmi 's carry audio and video signals in the one cable. You would only need the Optical[audio] cable if you have a receiver. Most modern TV's , if not all, do not have Optical or Coaxial inputs. They are all outs. If the equipment requires an analogue source such as RCA leads, make sure your TV and your PS are set to the correct digital or analogue settings as the PS3 had to be reset manually when cables were changed. The picture quality will be better in 1080 Hdmi.
